StartSalam (Salam Sign-Up) — how to permanently delete your account and exactly what happens to your data.

This page belongs to StartSalam, the community platform operated at startsalam.com and in the StartSalam mobile apps (app name: Salam Sign-Up). It explains how any registered user can permanently delete their account — no app installation is required; you can delete your account right here in a web browser.

How to delete your account

On the web (this page): sign in below and confirm deletion. This works in any browser, without installing the app.
In the app: go to Profile → Settings → Privacy → Delete my account.
By email: if you can no longer sign in, email privacy@startsalam.com from the address registered to your account and we will process the deletion after verifying your identity.

Delete individual data without deleting your account

You don't have to delete your whole account to remove specific data. You can delete or remove each of the following individually, at any time, in the app or on the web at startsalam.com:

Posts: open your post → tap the … menu → Delete. The post and its attached photos/videos are deleted immediately.
Comments: find your comment on a post → tap the … menu on your comment → Delete. Removed immediately.
Messages: open the conversation → tap the trash icon on your message → confirm. The message and any attached chat media are deleted immediately.
Profile information: go to your Profile → Edit → change or clear your name, username, or bio, and save. Changes take effect immediately.
Uploaded media: delete the post or message containing the photo/video (steps above), or replace your avatar/cover image via Profile → Edit by uploading a new image. The old file is removed from storage.
Saved posts: tap the bookmark icon on a saved post again (from the feed or your Saved tab) to unsave it. Removed immediately.
Follows: open the person's profile → tap Unfollow (also available from your Following lists). Removed immediately.
Blocks: go to Profile → Settings → Privacy → Blocked users → Unblock. Removed immediately.

Retention for individual deletions: the deletions and removals above are immediate and permanent — the content is deleted from our active systems at the moment you confirm, and no copy of it is retained beyond the encrypted backups described in What we retain, and why below. If a moderator previously took action on specific content, the moderation audit record of that action is kept for abuse-prevention and legal compliance, as described below. Deleting individual data does not affect the rest of your account.

What is deleted

When you delete your account, the following is permanently removed:

Your sign-in credentials and authentication record, including linked Google/Apple sign-in identities.
Your profile (name, username, bio, avatar) and contact details.
All of your posts, comments, likes, and drafts.
Your follows, followers, follow requests, and blocks.
Your private conversations and messages, including chat media.
All uploaded media (avatars, images, videos) from our storage.
Your saved posts, notifications, device/push tokens, and email preferences.
Reports you filed, appeals you submitted, and your account roles.
Your email address in our send logs and unsubscribe tokens.

What we retain, and why

Moderation audit entries (anonymized): if a moderator previously took action on your account or content, we keep a record of that action for abuse-prevention and legal compliance — but your user ID is irreversibly removed from it.
Email suppression entry (hashed): if your address was on our do-not-email list (for example after an unsubscribe or a bounced email), we keep only a one-way cryptographic hash of the address so we never email it again. The address itself is deleted and cannot be recovered from the hash.
Backups: encrypted backup copies may persist for a limited period on the normal backup rotation before being overwritten.
Aggregate statistics: anonymized counts (e.g. total signups) that cannot identify you.

Sign in with Apple

If you signed up with Sign in with Apple, deleting your account removes your Apple identity link from our systems. StartSalam does not retain Apple authorization tokens. You can additionally revoke StartSalam's access at any time in your Apple ID settings under Sign in with Apple.
